Serves 4


1 bunchEwedu leaves

1 teaspoon iru (locust bean)

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon potash (kanwu) (optional)


(Ewedu) Preparation:


  • Remove ewedu leaves from the stem and wash them
  • Put 2 cups of water and bring to a boil, add the ewedu leaves, potash(optional) and steam for about 3 minutes
  • Bring it down and sieve it, then use a clean broom and  beat into a smooth, thick, finely-ground paste
  • Return back to fire and sprinkle egusi(optional) on it, add your iru and beat it again
  • Add salt to taste

Serve with stew, gbegiri
